Live | Work

2015

Inspired from the traditional arab houses known as "Bastakiya", this project focused on creating a habitable space that could incorporate areas of work. The client was an artist who required public spaces such as exhibition space, work space and private spaces as resting, living and other private spaces.

The design approach was to create a procession and experience that moved from public and private - essentially something easily accessed and viewable to something that is hidden but still provides comfort.

The entire home was essentially a visual play using screens and perforations using brick. Not only did it create secret passageways, access to light and experience but it was also a good guide for  a viewer. Depending on the nature of perforations and light play, the viewer entering the space would have a sense of the type of space they are moving into.
