This self developed brief was tailored to cater to the Rehabilitation sector in the United Arab Emirates. There is still a huge stigma centered around substance abuse disorder specifically, which has led to fewer treatment facilities and options.
Statistics have shown that for people who suffer from substance abuse and alcohol disorder fall between the ages of 15 - 25. Hence, the goal was to design a social rehabilitation center that draws focus on the above mentioned age group and cater to their needs by designing age specific facilities and well functioning spaces.
Further de-stigmatization can be done through design by breaking the preconceived idea of the appearance of rehabilitation centers.
THE ARTS EXTENSION BUILDING
The project involved using a site that was on campus; The Arts Building. The design brief involved designing an extension to the existing arts building using a carefully curated and fixed list of spaces. The extension was to transform into a community center.
In terms of the form, the idea was to create a loop and the approach was abstract the form to add a twist to it. The reason why a loop became the main concept, in terms of form and preliminary spatial arrangement, was because the concept of a community center involves creating a space for people to come together for activities, events, focus groups, etc. Conceptually, the idea was to create a “loop” (i.e, center) of various interconnecting activities that wholesomely satisfies its purpose of connecting people.
